- Canopy Shade Canopy shade is found below closely grown trees where some light filters through. Ideal for the protection of herbaceous plants.
- Deep / Full Shade Shade below spreading evergreen trees where sun's rays are unable to penetrate the canopy at any time. For light sensitive plants
- Dry Shade Shady areas where soil has poor water retention or are dependent on rain for their moisture needs.
- Light or Dappled Shade Found below trees with sparse, open foliage. Ideal for the protection of herbaceous plants.
- Partial Shade The area is in shade for part of the day and in full sun for part of the day.
|
General Information |
- Drought Tolerance: Moderate The plant is moderately adapted to arid conditions and can survive short periods of drought and high temperatures without extra water.
- Evergreen to semi-deciduous The plant is evergreen in warmer, wetter parts of the country, but may lose some of its leaves during winter in colder, drier situations.
- Fragrant / Aromatic These plants posses a strong, usually pleasant odour.
- Frost: Tender A plant that will not survive any frost or low winter temperatures.
- Salt spray tolerant A plant with specific adaptations enabling it to grow in a saline environment.
- Water Moderate These plants will need some extra watering compared to water-wise plants. Plant them together, in at least some shade and in a convenient proximity to the house so that grey water can be utilised during times of drought.
|
Specific Information |
The variegated, shiny, leaves are attractive all year round. The variegated version does not seem quite as vigorous or tolerant to stress as the wild green variety, making it somewhat easier to shape and control.

Plant Uses |
- Accent or Focal Point A plant used to attract the attention because of its colour or form.
- Attracts bees, butterflies or other insects This plant attracts insects which can be food for birds or other creatures in your garden.
- Boundary A plant useful for planting around the edges of the property to form a green or colourful backdrop, an impenetrable hedge, to hide walls or create privacy.
- Container Trees, shrubs and ornamental species that can adapt to growing in a restricted environment.
- Filler Either a fast growing tree or shrub used temporarily to fill in an area while the permanent plants grow to a desired size, or a plant used to fill gaps in borders or beds.
- Foliage Plant Plants grown because their foliage is colorful or unique. Many of these plants have insignificant flowers.
- Ground Cover Low-lying plants that spread fast, require minimal maintenance, and cover large expanses or bare areas between bulbs or shrubs. They provide protection from erosion and drought and improve the visual appearance of the garden.
- Suitable for coastal gardens Plants adapted to dry, sandy soil, forceful wind, limited rainfall and intense sunlight.
- Suitable for smaller gardens Such plants do not have invasive root systems, remain small or controllable and can often be grown in containers.
- Wild Garden An indigenous garden planted for the benefit of wildlife and birds. Provides food, water, a variety of mini-biomes and no poisonous chemicals are used.

Planting Suggestions |
Plant in well-drained, composted garden soil. Feed regularly if the soil is poor to encourage vigorous growth and flowering. Once established less watering will be required but keep an eye out for signs that water is needed: leaves become dry around the edges and begin to drop off. Provide the support of a trellis or fence for the succulent stems as they climb, or allow the plant to twine through other shrubs or trees by planting it at the base of a tree and leaving it to climb up naturally. It dies back in cold climates so plant it in a sheltered position. Cut away frost damaged parts and the plant will quickly recover again in spring. If a dense shrub is required, snip the tips off the leading stems every now and then. Senecio tamoides reportedly makes an excellent groundcover if allowed to spread horizontally.

Senecio Tamoides - how to control?
I planted this initially to provide screening along a new weldmesh fence. It is now rather too well established, and is swarming over and through existing shrubbery. I am concerned that cutting it back will encourage it to become more vigorous and am thinking of poisoning it. Any thoughts/suggestions?
